Contemporary Colorful Indian Art Impressionist Oil Paintings

India and it’s wonderful scenery and spiritual heritage is probably my favourite motif. In winter I escape nearly every year to the hot and balmy, colourful and chaotic place know as India. I travel a lot in this country and paint and sell my paintings as I go. Quite often I will set up an impromptu exhibition and hang the paintings off the wall on wires, unmounted and unframed. Its quick easy and fun and they always sell out to cover fund another bout of traveling around this amazing country.

India is a painter’s dream. Bright colours, vibrant landscapes, interesting people and an ever changing scene. You could sit in one place for a day and see a hundred scenes to paint. And to make this better still, its cheap and the spicy food a treat and the weather in winter, nearly always kind to the body.

Many paintings centre around spiritual motifs and temples in India as this is a huge part of what India is.Its spiritual heritage is second to none and it is this amazing spiritual heritage which takes me back there time and time again. There is something which cannot be heard, is not seen, and cannot be touched in this country, and yet this invisible entity is greater than the whole of the physical experience itself. The spiritual magic and aura of India is ever present and unavoidable. This energy, this atmosphere absorbs you into its very being and flows through your body. When you arrive back in the UK after a long trip it takes a while to get back to normal and accept the Western life style we are so used to. You long for and pine for the Spiritual India which you left behind and long to return to this addictive place.

The paintings are atmospheric and colourful and will lift your mood where ever you are. Each one is special to me and I keep them in the studio for some time to soak up the aura of India before they go up for sale.

Samadhi - A temple and spiritual tomb (Samdhi) at Meherabad in central India where I have produced many works centred around this remarkable motif. This is where the Spiritual Perfect Master Meher Baba was buried in 1969. This place is quite special, simple and beautiful. It is in the stunning rural countryside, 5 hours from Mumbai, with a lovely hot and dry climate. I return here time and time again for the great food and the ever changing light and scenes to paint. Every visit I find a new angle to paint the area from. After traveling around much of India for 20 years it is this place where I have found the most spiritual atmosphere of anywhere I have ever visited. The purity and power of the energy at this place is quite remarkable and yet it is largely untouched by the usual greed and grubbiness surrounding many spiritual sites.

Amartihti. The remarkable celebration in India to celebrate the death of Meher Baba. A 48 hours celebration of constant music, songs and chants, all held under huge colourful tents and pandals. With over thirty thousand Indians from all over rural India converging on this place, it is an unforgettable experience and one packed full of amazing scenes to photograph and paint. With such crowds, this beautiful peaceful place is turned upside down in the physical sense and you have to watch your pockets and possessions as it also attracts quite a few pickpockets, even with a heavy police and army presence.
With these crowds surging through the place you would think the place would buckle under the pressure, but the quaint and discreet tomb holding the remains of Meher Baba, picks up the energy and gives out its rays of love like a mega sound system pulsing through the air. After the chaos, noise and intensity of the celebration, the visiters all leave on trains, buses and rickshaws back to their homes. The Samadhi tomb takes on a serene silence after this event and a perfect stillness which grows and grows until the place slows down for the intense heat of April, May and June. If ever you could find perfect peace and silence, then this is the place to find it in the heat of April, but beware, it is hot and the accommodation closes down.
