The Ocean is one of my three favourite motifs for oil painting. The endless, Infinite oneness of ever moving and flowing movement of the ocean is a joy to paint.
The way the light dances and reflects of the sky, sea and sand create many opportunities to paint interesting and vibrant paintings which can be both abstract and representational.
The colours tend towards blues, ochres and purples. In stark contrast to this, the daily sunsets introduce much warmer yellows, reds and pinks. The way the light dances across the sea with ever increasing reflection as the sun lowers and colours warm is unforgettable and stunning. Paintings of these sunsets are always popular and sometimes sell the same day in the shop in Croyde. Sunsets are the most fun to paint because of the loose form, the abstract nature of the colour and the dancing reflecting light.
The ocean also makes a great link with many of my spiritual paintings as the ocean in Indian Spiritual writings is often used as a representation of the infinite being and oneness which in the West we call God. The movement of the oceans, their vast size, unyielding nature and huge power all bear great similarity with the vision of God in both the East and the West.
Where the ocean meets the land is the beach, a place of spiritual release and contemplation where mind is drawn t the lure of the ever present ocean. Beaches of freedom and joy embellish the land with the gems of the ocean.
